Manchester United benefitted from years of Sir Alex Ferguson’s experience, and he still knows what he is talking about.

Sir Alex Ferguson does not give media interviews very often, so when he does, the world should pay attention.

The great boss spoke at the beginning of the season about what he liked from the start of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, and his response left some people puzzled.

All that was needed was for a little time to play out, to prove Sir Alex right.

Sir Alex Ferguson predicted Aston Villa rise

Sir Alex Ferguson gave an interview to CBS Sports after the first weekend of the season, and he was asked which team had impressed him the most. He named Aston Villa.

Ferguson responded: “I watched Aston Villa against Newcastle and I can’t believe the score. Honestly, Aston Villa played fantastic football and just lost to bad goals.”

The gaffer’s comments caused a stir because Aston Villa had lost the game 5-1 to a rampant Newcastle.

Now, a few months on, Ferguson looks like a visionary.

Aston Villa are flying under Unai Emery, with that loss to Newcastle looking like a freak result.

Villa this week beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, playing them off the park last night with 22 shots to City’s two.

They now sit in third place in the Premier League table, four points off top spot, with a goal difference of +14.

Ferguson identified the recruitment, management, and playing style after week one which was setting Villa up for a successful season, and was bold enough to speak his mind after such a negative opening result.

He was spot on, showing the savviness which helped him forge the most successful management career of all-time.

Aston Villa visit Manchester United later this month

Manchester United take on Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. It promises to be a very difficult game.

While have home advantage, Unai Emery’s team will play hard. United won this fixture 1-0 last season, but were beaten 3-1 at Villa Park.

Both teams have a few tough games between now and then. United play Bournemouth, then Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and West Ham.

The Boxing Day game is just one more hard game to add to the bunch, not Anfield levels of tricky, but a tough game nonetheless. Villa meanwhile are away to Arsenal this weekend.
