Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson would only demand to see a player in his office for one of “two reasons.”
That is according to TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand, who revealed the reasons for why Ferguson would request an audience with one of his United players.
Ferguson’s incredible 26-year reign at Old Trafford had several notable high points, including famously leading United to the treble during the 1998-99 season.
The 81-year-old iconic Scotsman was widely hailed for his influence from within the dugout and exerting his firm leadership with his United squad off the pitch.
Ferguson, who once made a personal call to sign a Premier League legend, wasn’t afraid to take one of his players to task with his infamous ‘hairdryer treatment.’
But Ferguson also had another side to him that wasn’t often seen during his time at United, with Ferdinand once revealing the only person who could make fun of him.
Following Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United have struggled to climb back to the top of English football and the big problems at Old Trafford remain present.
The ex-United manager’s incredible influence is still felt to this date, with Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola recently paying Ferguson the ultimate compliment.

Ferdinand on Ferguson summoning United players to his office
Ferguson’s incredible achievements at United were recognised with his induction into the Premier League Hall of Fame earlier this year.
Joining the ex-Aberdeen boss in the Hall of Fame at the time was none other than Arsenal icon Arsene Wenger, who enjoyed a legendary rivalry with Ferguson.
After Ferguson took his rightful place in the Hall of Fame, Ferdinand shared the exact two reasons that would lead to a player going into the ex-United boss’ office.
“There were only ever two reasons why he called you into his office,” he said in March, as per The Daily Mirror.
“If he was trying to run something by you: ‘What do you think of this? I’m thinking about this.’
“[The] second reason would always be because you are in a heap of trouble. I got called a few times to his office, but it wasn’t a nice walk.
“It was like when you were a kid and your dad used to call you and you knew you were bang in trouble. You’ve been suspended or a report had been sent home.
“I used to think, ‘Oh my God, my dad’s going to kill me.’ That’s the feeling you used to get when you used to go up to his office; I was a nervous wreck. You would either get the hairdryer or a nice warm hello.”
Ferguson’s influence at United continues to this date
Despite calling it time on his legendary career, Ferguson remains an ever-present figure at Old Trafford and is often spotted watching United in action during matches.
The Scotsman also has a key influence behind the scenes at Old Trafford, with Ferguson currently serving as a director on the football board at United.
Erik ten Hag has been no stranger in crossing paths with Ferguson, having had the opportunity to have dinner with him in Wilmslow, Cheshire, earlier this year.
Speaking on Ferguson’s influence at the club, the United boss said in February: “I always enjoy speaking with people who have a lot of knowledge, a lot of experience.
“He wants to share it; he wants to help and support. Manchester United is his club and he feels so committed.”
