Manchester United fans are hoping to see the club rise back to the top after a frustrating season in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

The international break is here and Manchester United fans may actually feel a little more encouraged after two impressive wins.

United beat Real Sociedad 4-1 in the Europa League last week before a 3-0 Premier League win at Leicester City.

Ruben Amorim may feel that the tide is turning and that United are starting to build some momentum.

It’s a long way back to the top of the game though and United may need some transformative signings to get there in the future.

That’s what Amorim will hope for this summer and Sir Alex Ferguson has previously highlighted the importance of such signings.

Sir Alex Ferguson praised found three game-changing Manchester United signings

Manchester United brought in Sir Alex Ferguson to replace Ron Atkinson in 1986 and the subsequent success was just extraordinary.

United won 13 league titles under Ferguson but the first didn’t arrive until the 1992-93 season.

Ferguson needed to be backed with key signings to take United forward and the Scot picked out three who really changes the club’s fortunes.

Speaking to ESPN in 2011, Ferguson admitted that he wanted Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans to become United’s centre back pairing of the future.

Ferguson highlighted the partnership between Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, believing that Smalling and Evans could follow.

The Scot admitted that he valued a quality centre back pairing so highly, as well as having a top goalkeeper behind them.

That wasn’t in place when Ferguson joined United but three transfers across a four-year span changed all of that.

Ferguson felt that signing Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister and Peter Schmeichel from 1987 to 1991 sparked an ‘incredible turnaround’ in United’s back line.

“One of the first things I said to Martin Edwards when I first came to United was, ‘you don’t have very good partnerships at the centre of defence’, and the goalkeeping situation was never a regular thing either,” said Ferguson.

“When we got [Peter] Schmeichel, [Steve] Bruce and [Gary] Pallister it was an incredible turnaround in consistency. The knowledge they gathered together, particularly with Bruce and Pallister, gave them that understanding. And they seldom missed games. That’s something you build over time.

“That just shows that partnerships are vitally important. We’ve seen that with Nemanja and Rio, and hopefully Jonny and Chris can develop that too,” he added.

Peter Schmeichel, Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister key to 90’s domination

Danish stopper Schmeichel was the last of the group to arrive, joining from Brondby in 1991.

It’s no great surprise that United then won a first league title within two years of the Schmeichel, Bruce and Pallister trio being formed.

Bruce came in from Norwich City in 1987 and will always be remembered for his two late goals against Sheffield Wednesday in 1993, crucially pushing United towards the title.

Now-Blackpool boss Bruce was not only a great defender but a real goalscoring threat too and racked up more than 400 appearances for United.

Pallister joined United from Middlesbrough in 1989 and formed a sensational partnership with Bruce.

Signing this trio enabled United to start the domination of the 1990’s with five league titles from the Premier League’s inception in 1992 to the end of the decade.

United have got it wrong in the transfer market too many times since Ferguson’s exit but this just goes to show how the right signings can have an incredible impact and spark a period of dominance for years to come.
