Manchester United parted ways with several players in the January transfer window of 2024 – including Sergio Reguilon.
Despite Erik ten Hag wanting to keep hold of the Spaniard, the club overruled the manager‘s decision and decided it was best if the Spaniard’s loan was terminated. He returned to Tottenham Hotspur after just under six months with the first-team squad.
It’s proven a bit of a mistake. Manchester United have had a crisis in the left-back position of late. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both have long-term injuries, which has led to some unorthodox full-back choices.
Alas, Reguilon was let go, and he moved to fellow Premier League outfit Brentford instead. He had his worst moment since leaving Old Trafford on Saturday.

Sergio Reguilon sent off after just nine minutes vs Burnley
After returning from injury, Reguilon endured a nightmare nine-minute comeback for the Bees.
He was sent off for a foul in the box on Vitinho. The Spaniard ploughed into the back of the Burnley man, and after a VAR check, a penalty and a dismissal were issued.
This put Thomas Frank’s side down to ten men and ultimately cost them the game against dead-bottom Burnley. A day to forget for the Bees, and more importantly Reguilon.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Frank agreed it was a penalty and a sending-off. He said:
“I think it’s a red card and a penalty [for Sergio Reguilon’s foul on Vitinho]. I think the situation with Ivan [Toney] and the goalkeeper [Arijanet Muric] was a disallowed goal, I understand that.”
Fara Williams on ‘silly’ Sergio Reguilon
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, former England women’s footballer Fara Williams commented on the Reguilon foul and dismissal. She believed the former Red Devil was ‘silly’ to commit the offence so early into the fixture.
“Five minutes in, Reguilon with the challenge,” she begins. “It’s a silly challenge. Vitinho takes a touch and Reguilon’s just on the wrong side of the attacker there. No attempt to play the ball. So early on in the game, as I said, it’s a silly one.”
Reguilon now suffers a two-match ban and will have to put in some solid performances until the end of the season if he has any hope of being purchased for good by Frank.
