Shocking numbers emerge from Newcastle defeat highlighting just how bad Man United were

Manchester United’s abysmal start to the season continues as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United and a shock statistic has highlighted their woes.

Erik ten Hag’s side, the holders of the competition, were eliminated after a dismal first half and, despite a positive start to the second half, never looked like scoring.

Manchester United hardly had a kick in the opposition’s penalty box and Newcastle, who have a habit of being superb defensively, proved how good they are once again.

Well, one shocking statistic has emerged after the game and it’s a terrible indictment of the modern-day United under Ten Hag.

Terrible statistic

According to Richard Jolly of The Independent, United had just two shots on target, which was one less than the amount of captains the club had on the night.

With Casemiro, the captain on the night, being substituted at half-time, this meant that Victor Lindelof was given the captaincy and then the introduction of Bruno Fernandes meant that United had three captains on the night.

This really just rams home how poor United were at Old Trafford and for the second time in four days, the Red Devils were comprehensively beaten at home and the questions are beginning to be asked about Ten Hag.

United’s home struggles

The Red Devils, truth be told, have looked abysmal in pretty much 90 per cent of the games they have played this season, and that continued during the Carabao Cup drubbing by Eddie Howe’s men.

Where the club goes from here is anyone’s guess, with just two Premier League games to go before the next international break, some fans would be forgiven for counting down the days until that moment arrives.

Ten Hag will have to try and cajole his players for the trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham in London and anything other than a win, and a convincing one at that, would be another concern for the Red Devils.
