Manchester United welcomed a new name onto the scoresheet in the team’s FA Cup fourth round win away at Newport County.

Kobbie Mainoo scored the first goal of his Manchester United career in the team’s 4-2 win over Newport.

Mainoo, 18, was growing in confidence in the first team before this strike, and seeing the ball hit the back of the net will have given him another lift.

It was another sign that Mainoo truly belongs in the United side. Yes, the goal came against lower league opposition, but it was the first of many he will score in his career.

Kobbie Mainoo sends message

Kobbie Mainoo sent a message out on Instagram after the game, celebrating his goal, and urging supporters to do the same.

He wrote: “First Senior Goal! Enjoy your evening Reds🤞🏾”

Manchester United teammates past and present reply

Mainoo received responses from his Manchester United teammates – and one former one, Sergio Reguilon, whose loan was cut short earlier this month.

Reguilon is clearly still paying attention to how United are getting on, reaching out to label Mainoo a ‘baller’ after his goal.

Amad, Rasmus Hojlund and Willy Kambwala were among those to also reach out to the young midfielde.r

Mainoo adding to his game

Kobbie Mainoo scoring goals is adding to his game, and Manchester United do need midfielders who can chip in with goals.

During his academy days, Mainoo was not prolific although did contribute, scoring four goals, two for the under-18s and two for the under-21s.

And in a December 2022 first team friendly against Cadiz, Mainoo really caught Erik ten Hag’s eye by getting onto the scoresheet after being on the pitch for a matter of minutes.

Now he is off the mark for the first team in a competitive game, Mainoo will feel more at home, and he won’t have to worry about a long wait for his first one.
