Scotland star Scott McTominay has explained why his career has been going from strength to strength after he left Manchester United and signed for Napoli.

Scott McTominay has caught the eye of the football world after the 29-year-old former Manchester United midfielder’s spell at Serie A club Napoli since 2024.

United sanctioned the sale of the Scotland international during Erik ten Hag’s reign and McTominay has been able to make a real name for himself in Italy.

McTominay captured the Serie A title in his debut season at Napoli and was even named in the 30-man shortlist for France Football’s Ballon d’Or award in 2025.

Former Man Utd star Scott McTominay on the key factors behind his transformation at Napoli

Scott McTominay took home the Serie A Most Valuable Player award in the 2024-25 campaign after his superb exploits under outgoing Napoli manager Antonio Conte.

The Scotland international found the back of the net 13 times and registered six assists in 36 matches across all competitions for Napoli in his debut season.

McTominay, who was sold by Manchester United for a £25.7m fee, has continued his run of form for the Serie A outfit in the latest campaign under Antonio Conte.

The ex-United youth academy product admitted he has been getting more accustomed to his role on the pitch and benefiting from the influence of the Napoli coaching staff since his 2024 move.

When asked what has made things ‘click’ so well at Napoli, McTominay told GQ magazine: “It’s a difficult question, to be honest.

“It was important to be playing in my regular position as a number eight, where you can attack and defend as well.

“So, I was comfortable in my role instantly. And the manager and the coaching staff have been a big influence, helping me grow and helping me understand the game a little bit better.”

Scott McTominay speaks on the other added elements to his major change at Napoli after his Man Utd transfer

Despite Napoli’s failure to defend the Serie A title in the 2025-26 campaign, McTominay scored 14 times and picked up four assists in 44 matches across all competitions.

McTominay admitted that his own work outside of Conte and Co’s input has been important to his development, including what he does on and off the pitch.

“So, for me, it was routine work,” he continued.

“You just hope that the fruits of your hard work can come out and show that you’re a good player and capable of helping a team win a league, which was what happened.

“But now I want to repeat that. I’ve had a taste of it, and I don’t want to rest where I am. I want to continue to push boundaries.”

McTominay, who lifted an FA Cup and a League Cup with Man Utd, is set to represent Scotland at the World Cup tournament this summer.
