Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been suspended after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season.

The midfielder picked up a booking against Everton during his brief substitute appearance.

McTominay was a 83rd minute substitute, managing only four touches during this time, with United required to dig in and defend and see off the late Everton rally.

United won the game 2-1, thanks to goals from Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo, who struck his 700th club career strike.

Scott McTominay suspended: Impact on the team

McTominay’s suspension comes amid a shift by Erik ten Hag, which has seen the Scotland international drop to the bench, with Casemiro preferred.

Casemiro had a mixed game against Everton but came through it well in the end after a poor start, contributing the assist for Ronaldo’s winner.

McTominay being suspended is not a huge loss considering Casemiro was probably being lined up to start next Saturday.

It does mean McTominay is a near certain starter in the Europa League against Omonia Nicosia in midweek. He was a substitute against them last Thursday.

United will want to rest Casemiro ahead of Sunday’s match against Newcastle, which will take place at Old Trafford on Sunday at 2pm.

The match could be a pivotal one, with Manchester United in fifth, one point ahead of Newcastle who are sixth. The Red Devils also have a game in hand, and can open up a gap with a victory over Eddie Howe’s side.

The midfield will likely be Casemiro, Eriksen and Fernandes, with Fred and McTominay potentially both coming in against Omonia.
