Scott McTominay proved to be the saviour of Manchester United as his double rescued the game for the Red Devils and gave Erik ten Hag’s side a crucial three points.
A win sees Manchester United move to ninth but what that last-gasp winner could do for the club could be worth even more than the three points they earned today.
As mentioned, Scott McTominay was the man of the moment and it was almost written in the stars that the midfielder, who has struggled for chances under the former Ajax boss, was to be the one that rescued him.
Speaking after the game, McTominay revealed what Erik ten Hag told him before he came on.
Ten Hag’s words of wisdom
The Dutchman already joked in the post-match press conference that he gave the Scotsman a simple message: “I said, ‘Score two goals’!”.
Well, the midfielder has weighed in on what the Dutchman said and provided a rather humourous response of his own.
“It was very loud, the fans were roaring us on so I couldn’t hear fully,” the United academy graduate admitted. “He [Ten Hag] probably said something like: ‘Go on and score,’ which is what I did.”
Whatever instructions Ten Hag gave the 25-year-old seemed to work a treat as he was a nuisance in the box for Thomas Frank’s side to deal with, which they didn’t.
New McTominay role emerging
The midfielder has struggled in his supposed best role for the team which is in the middle of the park but could he be deployed further forward?
The answer is seemingly yes. The striker’s instinct McTominay showed to rifle in Diogo Dalot’s effort for the equaliser and the deftness of his headed effort was that of a striker.
McTominay has recently done very well under Steve Clarke for Scotland as he has been pushed further forward and you wonder if this could be an option Ten Hag would consider.
With United currently having a dearth of attacking options, McTominay could be the man to solve this problem.
