Scott McTominay could face tough test against Robert Lewandowski

Scott McTominay and Scotland were meant to be gearing up for a World Cup qualification play-off against Ukraine this week. Of course, the global landscape means that game has been rightly called off.

That means that Steve Clarke’s men face a less intense affair tonight, a friendly clash with Poland at Hampden Park.

While the atmosphere will lack the intensity of a game with the World Cup just 180 minutes away, but McTominay could still face a stern examination.

McTominay has often been deployed at the back for Scotland, playing on the right of a back three, where he can carry the ball into midfield.

If he plays in defence tonight, he will likely face Poland and Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski, who has 45 goals in 37 matches this season, as per Transfermarkt.

With United on the hunt for a new striker, and Lewandowski’s future at Bayern up in the air, he has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer.

A move to sign a younger striker would be great – but Lewandowski is the best in the world, still playing at the highest level and he would instantly make United more dangerous.

McTominay could get a chance to see that for himself tonight, and as per the Times, he has talked up Lewandowski ahead of the game.

“I’ve never played against him properly,” he said of the striker. “I think it was pre-season against Bayern Munich, and Jose Mourinho was the manager. But his goal record speaks for itself.

“He’s a phenomenal footballer. The way he looks after his body, it’s something I aspire to be like when I’m a bit older. You get what you put into football. He obviously works extremely hard at his game and looking after himself. He deserves every credit and all the success in the world for that.”

“That’s the only way you find out if you are any good. You don’t get any better by playing against not as a good a calibre of player. For us, there will be boys who’ve never played against someone like Robert Lewandowski, myself included.

“If he plays, you need full concentration. If he doesn’t, then it’s full concentration on someone else. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big name or just a young kid coming up, you respect everybody you play against.”

While McTominay’s bid for a World Cup place has to wait, he could still be in for a huge test tonight if he is up against Lewandowski.
