Nottingham Forest’s vice-captain Ryan Yates lavished praise on Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson following Forest’s 1-0 shock win against Liverpool.

Steve Cooper’s Reds pulled off a big upset at the City Ground to inflict a third top-flight defeat of the season on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.

Fresh after registering his second clean sheet of the season midweek after Forest drew 0-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion, Henderson made it back-to-back clean sheets with an inspired performance against United’s arch rivals.

According to SofaScore, the 25-year-old made seven saves against the Anfield side, but his best was no doubt to stop Virgil van Dijk from rescuing a late equaliser.

The Dutchman headed an Andy Robertson corner low down, but the one-time England international showed great reflexes to claw the ball to safety, and then he celebrated with the Forest crowd.

After picking up their second Premier League win of the season, Forest vice-captain Yates and manager Cooper spoke in glowing terms about Henderson’s crucial role in the victory.

Yates said: “They get two chances at the end – Dean [Henderson] unbelievable. It’s top draw, but he knows he’s a top keeper and we know that, and that’s back-to-back clean sheets.”

Cooper said: “Alisson’s made the save of the game, Dean won’t thank me for that because he made some amazing saves as well.”

Henderson will no doubt be hoping his impressive string of performances potentially force England manager Gareth Southgate into a rethink ahead of naming his World Cup squad.

The one-time England international will likely be included in Southgate’s provisional squad, which could include 55 players, but with Henderson competing against Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale for a place on the plane to Qatar, it would be a surprise to see the Manchester United Academy stopper oust any of the aforementioned trio.
