Ryan Giggs has insisted that legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had an all-important “safeguard” in place during his time at Old Trafford.

The 50-year-old legendary Welshman spent the large majority of his Manchester United playing career under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Ferguson handed Ryan Giggs his United debut during the 1990s after the former Wales manager emerged through the Premier League club’s youth academy.

Giggs enjoyed incredible success during his time under Ferguson, including lifting a whopping 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies.

The former United star took up the role of player-coach in the 2013-14 season after Red Devils legend Ferguson bowed out of Old Trafford in 2013.

Giggs briefly took charge of United as interim manager in 2014 after former Red Devils boss David Moyes was axed from Old Trafford.

The United legend called it time on his legendary playing career in 2014 before he became assistant manager under Louis van Gaal for two seasons at Old Trafford.

Giggs on Ferguson and Man Utd

Speaking to the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel, Ryan Giggs claimed that David Gill was like a “safeguard” for Manchester United during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time.

David Gill served as chief executive for United and had a close working relationship with Ferguson, with the 67-year-old widely praised for his work behind the scenes.

The former United chief executive stepped down from his role in 2013 and left Old Trafford at the same time as Ferguson retired.

Giggs now believes that the “really important” role that Gill played in ‘safeguarding’ United has returned with the appointment of Dan Ashworth as sporting director.

“Well, I think you know what was great about the relationship with David Gill and Sir Alex, not only the players that we got in but also the players that we said no to or maybe David Gill said no to Sir Alex,” he said.

“I think that is really important that we safeguard the club. Now, of course, you’ve got to try and give the manager what he wants, but also doing the best for the club as well.

“So, having one eye, like I say, on the future there, if another manager comes in, is this player going to thrive under another manager, under another philosophy?

“So, I think that’s really important that, yeah, you want to give the manager the best opportunity to win things, but also have one eye on the bigger picture and safeguard in the club in three, four, five years’ time.”

Giggs on Ashworth in key role

Giggs dropped high praise on Dan Ashworth and the work that the United sporting director has already done at Old Trafford this summer.

Ashworth was a key target for Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe after his work at Newcastle as a sporting director and as a technical director for West Brom and Brighton.

Speaking on what Ashworth brings to his role, Giggs said: “I think it’s a number of things.

“I think it’s the know-how of players worldwide, relationships with agents, with other clubs, and that you can get the deals done and not be overpaying, which we’ve certainly done in the last 10 years, and getting value for money, getting young, hungry players who want to play for the club and we’re not paying stupid money for which we regret down the line.

“So, I think there’s a number of things, his experiences, his know-how, things that maybe he’s done wrong in the past, which, you know, everyone learns from their mistakes. I think it’s an excellent appointment.

“And, you know, I’m excited, like all the United fans, to see what he can he can bring to the club.”
