Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed that he named one of his children after one of his Manchester United team-mates.

Considered a Manchester United legend after spending two spells at Old Trafford, one as a player and another as a coach, Ruud van Nistelrooy is one of the greatest strikers to have played in the Premier League.

Van Nistelrooy was a lethal goalscorer during his time at Manchester United, scoring 150 goals in 219 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Netherlands international returned to Old Trafford during the summer of 2024 to work with Erik ten Hag before taking over on an interim basis before Ruben Amorim was made United head coach.

Van Nistelrooy left Old Trafford for a second time following Amorim’s appointment, before taking the manager’s job at Leicester City. His future is up in the air after suffering relegation to the Championship.

Ruud van Nistelrooy names son after Liam Miller

During his five seasons as a United player, Van Nistelrooy played with some tremendous players, but he only chose to take inspiration from one when naming his son.

Liam van Nistelrooy is on the books at PSV Eindhoven where his father played before moving to Old Trafford.

Gary Neville interviewed Van Nistelrooy for an episode of The Overlap when he asked the Dutchman about the name he gave his son Liam, which he described as a ‘British’ name.

Van Nistelrooy responded: “We played with Liam [Miller] at United. He signed from Celtic. I remembered, I liked the name.”

Miller, who made 22 appearances for United, tragically passed away on 9 February 2018 following a battle with pancreatic cancer, aged 36.

Miller also enjoyed spells at Leeds, Sunderland, Queens Park Rangers, Hibs and others.

Van Nistelrooy set for discussions over future

Although Van Nistelrooy’s contract as Leicester City manager runs until the summer of 2027.

That said, suffering relegation from the Premier League could lead to heavy consequences for the former PSV Eindhoven manager.

According to Sky Sports, Van Nistelrooy will meet with Leicester chiefs this week for discussions over his future, but he will remain in the dugout for the remainder of the season.

The writing appears to be on the wall for Van Nistelrooy, with candidates already emerging for the job as Leicester plan to make a quick return to the top flight.

The shortlist of possible replacements includes Lee Carsley, Danny Rohl and Russell Martin.

Van Nistelrooy didn’t get the results he desired at the King Power Stadium and their squad requires a lot of work.
