AC Milan legend Ruud Gullit believes there are comparisons to be drawn between the Italian giants and Manchester United in recent years, with both clubs struggling to recapture their previous glories.
Despite the difference in leagues, Manchester United and AC Milan are undisputed titans of European football, but they have been trapped in transition.
United are on course to return to the Champions League, sitting third in the Premier League with five games left to play.
AC Milan find themselves in a similar position as they’re placed second in Serie A, eight points adrift of leaders Inter Milan.

Here’s how the Premier League table looks now this weekend’s games are complete – Confident??
There's no way United will blow a top five place!
Ruud Gullit says Man Utd guilty of same mistake AC Milan make
The mood at Old Trafford is positive right now thanks to the growing belief that the team will be playing in the Champions League next season.
It’s the competition United belong in, although they’ve had to endure some years of Europa League football or, even worse, no European football at all.
Speaking to the Daily Mail as a Laureus ambassador, Gullit stated that United have the same problem as AC Milan in that they think too much about the past when making decisions for the future.
“Man United think too much of the past,” Gullit said.
“That’s the past. It’s like Milan. That’s the past, also.
“You have to find a new way in order to come back. You have to be proactive.”
United and AC Milan look set to compete in the Champions League next season, but only time will tell if they can remain in Europe’s most prestigious competition as they did with their greatest teams.
Wow! This proves it is all about taking your chances!
Man Utd were clinical when it mattered!!!
Ex-Man Utd players set to win Serie A title
As things stand, Inter Milan are on course to win the Italian first division.
That means two former United players are in with a chance of winning the Serie A title, but it won’t be their first time.
Matteo Darmian could win the title for a third time since joining Inter, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan is looking to lift it for a second time.
Scott McTominay was victorious last season after a memorable debut campaign at Napoli.
