Peter Schmeichel thinks that one of Ruben Amorim’s key players might not “completely understand” his role in the Manchester United manager’s system.

The 62-year-old Manchester United legend dropped his two cents on the Red Devils after Ruben Amorim’s men completed their visit to Villa Park on Sunday evening.

Aston Villa hosted United for their latest Premier League encounter and Morgan Rogers was the standout performer after he netted a stunning brace for his side.

Morgan Rogers scored on the cusp of half-time for Villa before the Red Devils hit back in first-half injury-time, with Matheus Cunha netting the equaliser for his side.

However, the 23-year-old Villa winger ensured that Unai Emery’s men sealed all three Premier League points after he found the back of the net in the second half.

Peter Schmeichel singles out Leny Yoro after the struggling Man Utd star’s performance against Aston Villa

Leny Yoro was left deeply exposed in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, with the 20-year-old Frenchman caught out by Morgan Rogers on both occasions.

The United defender was deployed in the three-man backline of Ruben Amorim’s tactical system and Leny Yoro failed to close down Rogers inside the box.

Rogers cut in for Villa’s opener and beat Senne Lammens with a stunning curling strike, with the England star completing his brace with another long-range effort.

Peter Schmeichel admitted that Yoro might be confused by his instructions under United manager Amorim and failed to act on his “defensive instincts” in the match.

Rio Ferdinand has always urged patience with Leny Yoro

“He’s a student of the game, he sees his mistakes, he acknowledges his mistakes and he tries to learn from those mistakes.”

“I don’t think they completely understand what their roles are in this system,” he told Viaplay, as per the Metro.

“Conceding one goal in that manner, well, you’d think you never concede again. But you do.

“So, it’s a lot of things: focusing on their job, concentration and then, for some players, and I don’t want to be too negative because some of them are really young and need to learn, also their defensive instincts.

“The ball can come back to that area where they were. You saw Leny Yoro waiting and realising, ‘Oh, it’s coming back!,’ so he had to react instead of anticipate.”

Leny Yoro’s form has taken a major hit under Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim in recent weeks

Leny Yoro has looked vulnerable for the Red Devils in the three-man backline and the United defender has seen his form take a serious wobble under Amorim.

Amorim has been forced to play two youngsters in his backline recently, with both Yoro and Ayden Heaven playing alongside the more experienced Luke Shaw.

United manager Amorim has been forced to make changes to his three-man defence due to the injury absences of Red Devils stars Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt.

All eyes are now on Yoro to see whether or not the United centre-back can weather the storm and return to his best form before the end of 2025 and going into 2026.
