Ruben Amorim was once absolutely embarassed by Erik ten Hag, Antony was unstoppable

As quickly as Erik ten Hag was let go of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim may now be coming in.

The Portuguese manager, currently of Sporting Lisbon, is looking ever the more likely to become Red Devils boss. Amorim has already ‘verbally agreed’ to join United.

He’ll bring an entirely new formation, mentality and probably a few players along. It’ll be a completely different era to that of the Erik ten Hag one at Old Trafford.

But is that necessarily a good thing? Well, maybe not considering what Ten Hag did to Ruben Amorim back in 2021.

Ruben Amorim once beaten 5-1 by Erik ten Hag at Ajax

In the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League Group Stage, Ajax travelled to Sporting Lisbon, with Ten Hag at the helm of the Dutch club, and Amorim at Sporting. It’s safe to say Ten Hag came out on top, with the game finishing 5-1.

Sebastien Haller scored four goals as Ajax picked apart Portuguese hosts in their opening game of the campaign. Steven Berghuis got the other, with a consolation from Paulinho.

Ajax had a number of current Manchester United players in their side. Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Antony all started, with former star Daley Blind also featuring.

Antony was particularly inspired on the day, causing havoc on the right-hand side. He got two assists for Haller and was superb throughout. Mazraoui also got on the assist board.

Ten Hag’s side produced an absolute Champions League masterclass against Lisbon, which left Amorim looking more than a little red-faced.

Erik ten Hag also won home leg vs Ruben Amorim

In the reverse fixture, Ten Hag came out on top again. It finished 4-2 to Ajax, with goals coming from Haller, David Neres, Berghuis – and once again Antony.

Sporting’s goals were scored by Nuno Santos and Tiago Tomas, in a match where Manuel Ugarte also started.

The win for Ten Hag made it six out of six in a ludicrous Champions League group campaign.

Obviously this was a very different period, but Ten Hag has a 100% record against Amorim – which is intriguing.

The Portuguese manager’s Old Trafford arrival isn’t confirmed yet, but it’s getting close.
