Ruben Amorim told Man United have signed star with do-or-die attitude – the numbers back it up

Manchester United’s recruitment hasn’t been the best during The Glazer family’s reign. Over the past decade, the Red Devils have been one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders but haven’t won the silverware to match it.

United’s owners have spent nearly £1.5 billion on new signings since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, and overall, recruitment has been poor.

Too many players have joined for large fees, penned eye-watering contracts and underperformed.

If they’re serious about winning the Premier League again, this has to change. Restructuring the wage bill is something Sir Jim Ratcliffe is working on.

However, despite the negativity, Ruben Amorim has been told he has a gem on his hands.

Matthijs De Ligt rare good Man United signing

Even though they’ve made critical transfer mistakes over the years, signing Matthijs De Ligt from Bayern Munich last summer has not been one of them.

United paid £38 million for De Ligt who penned a five-year deal and pundit Jill Scott thinks the Red Devils’ decision to bring the 25-year-old to Old Trafford has been one of their best in recent times.

“They look like they’ve got a bit of attitude,” she said on The Overlap. “I like that [Matthijs] De Ligt. I think he looks like he’s going to put his body on the line.”

United’s spending over the past decade has raised many eyebrows. Scott is right though — signing De Ligt, especially for less than £40 million, was a solid piece of business.

Amorim will be delighted with the Dutch centre-back and how he’s adapted to his defensive system, which includes a three-man backline.

Stats back it up

Although stats make up just a small part of a player’s profile, De Ligt is certainly proving to be a key player at the back.

The commanding defender has been an integral part of Amorim’s style of play and his aggressiveness and willingness to risk life and limb for United has helped his popularity rise among fans.

Pretty impressive stats from a player who hadn’t played in England’s notoriously fast-paced and physical Premier League.

United will be delighted with De Ligt’s impact, and with an important second half of the season now underway, will be desperate to keep him fully fit.
