Ruben Amorim has drilled home an all-important message to his Manchester United players by making sure that they “could feel” one thing this season.
That is according to Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot, who revealed what Ruben Amorim “noticed straight away” during his reign at Old Trafford.
United manager Amorim arrived at the Premier League club from Sporting CP last November and succeeded Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot seat.
Erik ten Hag was sacked last October after a poor start to the 2024-25 campaign and Ruud van Nistelrooy was temporarily installed as United interim manager.
Ruud van Nistelrooy led the Red Devils for four matches – winning three and drawing one – before the United legend’s Old Trafford exit in 2024.
Amorim is now the sixth permanent manager at the Red Devils since legendary former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out of football in 2013.
Dalot on Amorim’s Man Utd message
Ruben Amorim has enjoyed some success at Old Trafford this season, including Manchester United’s run of results in the FA Cup and the Europa League.
The Red Devils are through to the fifth round of the FA Cup and United have also punched their ticket to the last 16 of the Europa League.
However, Amorim has overseen a tough period in the Premier League with United, with the Red Devils left in 13th place in the league table.
United are 12 points adrift from the relegation zone and Amorim’s men have fallen 14 points behind the race for top four in the 2024-25 campaign.
Amid United’s up-and-down form in the Premier League, Diogo Dalot insisted that Amorim has become well aware of the support from Red Devils supporters.
The 25-year-old United and Portugal right-back said that Amorim pointed out how “lucky” the players were to have the support of fans, despite their run of results.
“I never saw a big team losing the amount of games that we lost, and still having people after the game, looking at your face and [saying], ‘Come on, let’s go’ and clapping and giving you energy,” he explained, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“In other countries, you don’t have that luck. And, sometimes, what can happen is that players and the club can take that for granted.
“So, I think that’s one of the things that he [Amorim] noticed straight away. He made sure that we could feel that as well, in terms of, ‘Listen, you don’t know how lucky you are – losing a game and still having [that support].’”
Dalot talks impact of Man Utd fans
Dalot made his feelings clear on the spine-tingling reception that Red Devils players have received from fans by calling them the “soul” of the Premier League club.
“I remember we lost 4-0 at [Crystal] Palace last year and everybody – I don’t know how many fans were there, I expect 2,000 fans – still trying to motivate you and clap you after,” he added.
“That doesn’t happen, pretty much anywhere.
“I think you realise that it’s something that he was not used to, and it’s something that is good in my opinion.
“He made us sure that [we] know we are lucky to have the support that we have. I think it’s the soul of the club.”
