Ruben Amorim’s first year at Manchester United has been a rollercoaster.

Making his first anniversary as Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim takes his team to Nottingham Forest looking to make it four wins on the bounce in the Premier League.

The 40-year-old has dealt with lots of scrutiny since moving to United from Sporting CP, where he was hailed by the masses as a modern tactician after winning two Primeira Liga titles.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that the Premier League is a completely different animal. United finished 15th last season and began this current campaign poorly, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave Amorim his public backing regardless of that.

It bodes well that United have been on a winning run since Ratcliffe pledged his support for Amorim, as winning matches will only boost morale at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim reflects on tough run at Man Utd

There is no denying that the first 12 months have been difficult for Amorim at United.

The team’s recent run of impressive results has lifted the mood tenfold, but there is a lot of work to do if United are to make something of the 2025/26 campaign.

Amorim admits managing the squad is difficult without European football, which is why a top-six finish is the target this season.

Reflecting on a tough run at United, Amorim believes it could be the best thing that has ever happened to him as a coach.

“I went through a bad period – but that’s part of a coach’s life,” Amorim told DAZN.

“Looking back on my whole story, maybe that was the best thing that ever happened to me. It’s easy to say that now because we’re winning, but I honestly think I’m a much better coach today.

“It’s strange to say, but I think I am, because I learned how to overcome things I didn’t even know how to deal with before.”

Amorim has won only 21 of his 52 games in charge of United, which stands at 40.4%. The only manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era with a worse win rate is Ralf Rangnick (37.9%).

Ruben Amorim’s biggest win as Man Utd manager

United’s biggest win under Amorim came last season when they beat Everton 4-0 in the Premier League.

Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both scored two goals against the Toffees, who were managed by Sean Dyche at the time.

Dyche was sacked by Everton a month later.

United also beat Brighton 4-2 last weekend and they are aiming for another big win against Nottingham Forest this evening.
