Manchester United beat Fiorentina on penalties in their final pre-season friendly of the summer.

It was a successful pre-season for Manchester United as Ruben Amorim’s side went the entire summer unbeaten, after playing five games in Sweden, the United States and England.

The Red Devils lifted the Snapdragon Cup after a 5-4 win on penalties over Fiorentina, following a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the team’s final warm-up match of pre-season.

United welcomed their four new signings to Old Trafford as the United fans gave David de Gea a proper farewell after his sudden departure in 2023.

Amorim will hope United can continue their unbeaten form when their start the competitive campaign next week.

United now have eight days to prepare to face Arsenal in the Premier League season opener.

Ruben Amorim’s plans may change vs Arsenal

Amorim will be happy with United’s pre-season for a variety of reasons.

One of them is that none of United’s first team members sustained any fresh injuries on tour.

However, Andre Onana and Joshua Zirkzee missed all of the friendlies due to injuries, while Lisandro Martinez has yet to return to first-team training.

The one big change we could see against Arsenal is Onana returning from injury to start between the sticks, after Altay Bayindir featured in the majority of pre-season fixtures.

Amorim stressed in his post-match interview with MUTV that the players will change their plan over the coming days in training as they prepare to face Arsenal.

The United head coach enjoys having selection headaches, and he hopes to have more of them throughout the season.

“That [a selection headache] is a good thing, it is supposed to be like that, not like last season that we have to struggle to put 11 players on the pitch,” Amorim said.

“This is the normal thing so I need to think and they [the players] need to fight during the week, so they can change my mind, I have an idea but they will change my mind during the week.

“It is going to be tough because we try to arrange a full week of training, so we will have two really strong sessions with time to work and then we are going to break a little bit and then two days to really think about the strategy for the game and we will be ready.”

Amorim impressed by Mason Mount

After starting against Fiorentina and showcasing a standout performance, Mason Mount is in contention to feature in the line-up against Arsenal.

Mount was everywhere in the final third against Fiorentina, closing the ball down whenever the opportunity was there.

Amorim singled out Mount for praise after the match, adding: “It’s unbelievable the way he [Mason Mount] works, moving all the time from positions. He knows all positions, but also the other guys, it was a good test to prepare the first team.”
