Ruben Amorim’s process delivered its first major result as Manchester United came from behind to win 2-1 at Manchester City.

In a topsy-turvy game where neither side looked well clear of the other, Man Utd won the moments that fell their way and restricted City smartly.

After conceding a set-piece goal again, the pressure was on the Man Utd squad to respond and that is just what they did, completing a third comeback under Amorim in just seven games.

Not only did it leave City with just a single win in their last 11 games, but it also ensured that Ruben Amorim now stands alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in an esteemed list.

Ruben Amorim matches Sir Alex Ferguson

For a club that has gotten far too used to breaking all sorts of wrong records, anytime a manager finds himself in the company of Sir Alex, it’s bound to feel good.

Amorim even said post-match that United’s comeback reminded him a bit of “Fergie Time” and David de Gea had deja vu too at the comeback.

However, the comeback wasn’t the only thing that reminded Man Utd fans of the times under Sir Alex, as Amorim also joined the great man’s company.

With the win, Ruben Amorim became the first manager since Sir Alex to emerge victorious in his first Manchester Derby.

Since Sir Alex, the Man Utd manager post has been held in a permanent capacity by five managers, while Ralf Rangnick also managed against City.

Most of them played against Pep Guardiola’s City, who, more often than not, wiped the floor with United, putting into perspective the chasm between the two sides.

Granted, City are not in a good moment right now but United are in an even worse one, taking in a new system and patterns on the go with minimal training time.

Patterns are clear under Ruben Amorim

United have longed for an identity and philosophy at Old Trafford and amidst a rush to get positive results, have often skipped steps which leads to them stumbling.

Amorim has approached the job in the right way so far, prioritising performances and the intake of his instructions from the players.

He insisted before the City game that the performance in the loss vs Forest was better than the one in the win against Everton.

It takes guts to admit that publicly and risk ridicule but so confident is the Portuguese in his process and ideas that not only did he admit it, he publicly lays out reasons for saying so.

Against City, clear patterns of play were visible which provided something for the players to grab onto and gave the fans hope that there was finally identity at the club.

Even if United had lost, the performance was extremely encouraging but the win just adds cherry to the top of what was already looking like a pleasant cake.
