Ruben Amorim was disappointed his Manchester United side could not come away from Lyon with a win.

Manchester United drew 2-2 against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford.

The hosts were gifted a goal in the 26th minute when Thiago Almada’s cross ended up in the back of the net following another Andre Onana howler.

United fought back and responded before half-time when Leny Yoro scored his first goal for the club. Then, it looked like United had secured a late win when substitute Joshua Zirkzee made it 2-1 in the 88th minute.

Many United fans thought Zirkzee’s strike was the icing on the cake after a hard-fought battle in Lyon until Onana made another mistake for Rayan Cherki’s stoppage-time equaliser.

The tie will be decided at Old Trafford next week.

Ruben Amorim disappointed with Man Utd draw in Lyon

Despite conceding the opening goal, Manchester United were the better side throughout the game, but take nothing away from Lyon who matched Ruben Amorim’s side in most departments.

To qualify for the Europa League semi-finals, United will need to be at their best for the second leg.

Amorim expressed disappointment at his side’s shortcomings in Lyon as he stated they should’ve taken a one-goal advantage back to Old Trafford rather than leaving it all to play for next week.

“We are really disappointed [to concede late],” Amorim told TNT Sports after the match.

“We should have taken a one-goal advantage to the next game but we have the next game at home – we will try to win that game.”

Manchester United’s impressive Europa League run

Although Manchester United have been poor this season, especially in the Premier League, it’s been a completely different story in Europe.

United remain unbeaten in 11 matches in the 2024/25 Europa League and no other club left in the competition can say that.

Booking a place in the semi-finals could see United become favourites to go all the way in the competition this season.

It’s the only way United can secure a place in the Champions League.
