Roy Keane slams Manchester United duo after Brighton defeat

Former Reds captain Roy Keane slammed Manchester United duo Fred and Scott McTominay after the Reds 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

It has been no secret that Erik ten Hag has made Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong the club’s priority summer transfer target.

The chase for the former Ajax midfielder has dragged on and on, and with 25 days left in the summer transfer window – it remains unclear whether the Netherlands international is willing to forego Champions League football and reunite with his former manager.

On today’s evidence, it was made even more abundantly clear why Ten Hag needs the 25-year-old at Old Trafford to help implement his philosophy and playing style.

United’s ‘McFred’ duo of Fred and Scott McTominay looked off the pace against a Seagulls side that were missing recently departed Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella.

Speaking on Sky Sports, United’s former influential midfielder didn’t hold back on where he feels his old club need to improve in order to get back to the top.

Keane said: “The two in the middle of the park – all over the place. It’s the same habits as last season – Manchester United are as poor as any team in the Premier League out of possession.

“Not good enough [Fred and McTominay – they won’t get United back to the top, they are not up to it.”

McTominay was a tad fortunate to stay on the pitch after being given a yellow card for a rash out of control challenge on former Reds target Moises Caicedo.

The incident was checked by VAR but the Scot was let off the hook.

Fred was hooked early in the second half with United chasing the game and the Brazilian was replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo.

McTominay and Fred have had to deal with question marks throughout their United careers, but today was yet another glaring reminder of the quality United lack in the middle of the park.
