Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane looks like the type of man who would hate Christmas.

Notoriously a bit of a punditry equivalent to Scrooge or The Grinch, the legendary Manchester United captain has a bit of a reputation for playing down the sillier things in life.

However, in recent years, he has been showing a bit of a different side, appearing to lighten up a bit more, particularly in his appearances with the likes of Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and co. on various podcasts.

It was on one of these where he told the entertaining story of how he was banned from Manchester United‘s Christmas party.

Roy Keane shares Man Utd Christmas story

On a special Christmas episode of ‘The Overlap‘ podcast in 2023, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Jill Scott all sat down and discussed all things about the festive season.

Whilst tucking into some Christmas dinner, Keane recalled the hilarious story about how he was banned from Manchester United’s Christmas do back in his playing days.

“Do you remember when I got banned from the Christmas do once at Man Utd? Do you remember that?” Keane asked Neville.

“Well, there were two do’s (parties), I think I must have been injured,” Keane continued. “The reserves were having a night out and I went out with the reserves.

“I think there was a bit of bother in Manchester or something and I was trying to be the peacemaker.

“The first-team lads were going out one or two days later and Ferguson came in, in front of everyone and said, ‘Anyone seen drinking with me [referring to himself], would be fined.’ So yeah I wouldn’t be going to the other Christmas do.”

Trouble seems to follow Keane wherever he goes…

The story is a testament to the fact that wherever Keane is, trouble seems to follow.

The Irishman was known in his playing days for never backing down from an altercation… well it appears it was also apparent when he was out in town as well!

One thing is definitely for sure, we’d love to have Keane backing our corner if anything ever went down.
