Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has given his verdict on Andre Onana’s poor start at Manchester United.
Andre Onana has struggled to impress at Old Trafford so far and there have been calls for Erik ten Hag to drop the former Inter Milan goalkeeper in favour of Altay Bayindir.
Manchester United have kept only two clean sheets so far in the Premier League with three in all competitions and the goalkeeper’s ability on the ball has been questionable.
Roy Keane has now given his verdict on the former Ajax goalkeeper and, as you might expect, he’s not pulled any punches about United’s number one.
Keane’s Onana verdict
Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast, Keane was less than impressed and even joked that David De Gea, United’s former goalkeeper, was available on a free transfer.
“I would have kept him”, Keane joked.
“He’s had a really poor start. To be a goalkeeper at Man United is a hard position, you need a big personality after you’ve made mistakes. He’s already made a few mistakes, it’s not been a great start.
“We’ve seen other goalkeepers that have come to the club with a big reputation but, after a few mistakes, there seems no way back for them.”
Keane has been an outspoken critic of David de Gea, so his comments on the Spaniard are not to be taken seriously.
Ten Hag should persist with Onana
Back in 2012, after a few mistakes from De Gea, Anders Lindegaard was drafted into the United team and the Spaniard sat on the bench.
Sir Alex Ferguson kept De Gea on the bench briefly before reinstating the former Atletico Madrid man as the number-one.
Ten Hag should follow a similar path and take out the 27-year-old for a few games, allow Bayindir to make his debut, and allow Onana to have some time away from the limelight.
The pressure on the United number one is bound to be high but Onana is a great goalkeeper, time is on his side to prove to the fanbase he is good enough to be the first choice.
