Roy Keane blasts Manchester United pre-season 'PR'

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane says Manchester United’s players deserve no praise for simply turning up and doing their jobs.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Keane hit out at some of the overly positive headlines he had seen about United’s players during pre-season.

Keane wants the culture to change at United, and demands the players work hard and are not lauded for simply doing the bare minimum.

Manchester United’s first game of the season ended in a 2-1 defeat against Brighton at Old Trafford.

Keane on pre-season ‘PR’

Keane said of manager Erik ten Hag: “The culture at the club has to change. We’ve seen it too many games [where players don’t run]. He has to change that mindset.”

In reference to the club’s pre-season, he said: “There’s a lot of PR from Manchester United. They’re training on time, they are training properly? Praise the lord! That’s what you’re supposed to do.”

All of the pre-season work can count for something positive if the team take it into the season. But Sunday’s result showed this not to be the case.

The game against Brighton was like a repeat of last season, and while the scale of this job will clearly take new manager Erik ten Hag a long time to turn around, the result was very discouraging.

Roy Keane knows better than anybody that players have to go above and beyond simply ‘doing their jobs’ to attain the levels of success demanded at United.

The core of this team is still the same as last season, and nobody was fooled by a few pre-season training clips. Results are where United will be judged, and the team’s 2022/23 campaign is off to a terrible start.
