A 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace was so deflating the result felt like a defeat.

United just cannot seem to score freely at Old Trafford and this performance was particularly lacklustre.

Jose Mourinho fired off his usual comments indirectly berating individual players after the draw – but he must take responsibility as a manager who does not know his best team.

One of the biggest conundrums remains Romelu Lukaku.

Under performing striker

Lukaku has had a spell out of the team and should have been returning to the line up looking fresh.

There can only be so much leeway given to the Belgian for his performances being a World Cup hangover.

At the weekend he managed just 20 touches in 90 minutes, five of which were aerial duels he won. He had just one shot on goal.

Lukaku’s 20 touches was a lower total than goalkeeper David de Gea (28).

Some of this can be attributed to United’s attackers for failing to give Lukaku better service, but only so much.

The striker needs better movement, better hold up play, and simply to be sharper and quicker than he appears to be.

The break should have done him good. On this form it looks like he needs another one already.
