Manchester United interest in Cody Gakpo is ongoing, with Fabrizio Romano reporting the club are working behind the scenes on a deal.

The transfer guru says United are in contact with Gakpo’s agents, who also represent manager Erik ten Hag.

No fee has yet been agreed for the forward, with the World Cup expected to drive up his price.

He said: “There are no direct negotiations yet, but the reality is Manchester United are still in contact with the agents of Cody Gakpo.

“They have new contacts, a plan to have new discussions with the agents, the relationship is fantastic.”

He added: “They are working hard on this.”

Gakpo has three goals in three games for Netherlands in Qatar, their leading scorer at the tournament so far.

Gakpo ‘has something special’

Gakpo’s performances have been highlighted by former Netherlands striker Kees Kist.

Kist told Voetbal Primeur: “This guy has something very special, doesn’t he? He can gradually make the difference at any position in the attack.

“He fills the positions flawlessly. He can shoot well, with left and right, and he can head!

If a goal has to be scored, he gets up.”

“That’s so incredibly clever when you’re only 23 years old. He’s walking around this World Cup like it’s yet another big tournament. But he just came to see this stage and should actually still have stage fright. None of that.

“I have pure admiration for him. Let’s just be proud that we have such a versatile striker in Orange.”

Gapko is next in action on Saturday when Netherlands take on USA in the World Cup last 16.

The forward has been in incredible form for PSV Eindhoven this season, with nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games.
