Journalist Fabrizio Romano has been asked for the latest on David de Gea’s Manchester United contract situation on The United Stand YouTube channel.
De Gea’s current deal runs until at least June 2023, with the club holding the option to extend for a further year and Romano said he is confident that the Spaniard will sign a new deal.
The former Atletico Madrid man is back to his very best and looks very well placed to win United’s Player of the Season award for the fifth time.
And Romano expects de Gea, like Bruno Fernandes, to commit his future to United once again irrespective of who the new long-term manager is.

“It is something that Manchester United want to discuss this year, 2022,” said Romano when asked if a new deal for de Gea is in the pipeline.
“They don’t want to arrive in 2023 with de Gea’s future in danger. The player is more than appreciated by his teammates, the board, Ralf Rangnick – they know how serious he is, how professional he is.
“He’s having a fantastic season and saved United many, many times. They want to continue with de Gea and also he was very respectful of the club in the last interview he did, talking about his Manchester United life, even in not an easy period for United.
“He’s always showing his commitment so I’m sure, from what I’m told they want to get it resolved with David de Gea and I don’t see any problem with de Gea. They need to discuss and find an economical agreement but the plans from de Gea are always the same.”

Rice top of United’s midfield list
Elsewhere in the same interview, Romano also spoke about United’s list of targets to bolster the centre of their midfield this summer and said that West Ham’s Declan Rice is at the top of it.
“They will work as they always do with a list and there at the top of the list, of course, is Declan Rice.
“They love him, but it’s the same for Manchester City, Chelsea and many other clubs across Europe and it is not easy to sign him. Ruben Neves is another player they have always been following.”
The main issue with Rice is that David Moyes has recently said it would cost more than £100 million to sign the England international.
It might be the case that United opt to look at cheaper alternatives, given that a striker is also needed this summer as well as potential surgery in other positions as well.
But sorting de Gea’s future would be a boost after he re-established himself as one of the league’s best goalkeepers this season and kept his standards high even as teammates faltered.
