Charlie Savage got a big opportunity for Manchester United by playing in Erik ten Hag’s first ever match as manager.

Savage was a half-time substitute as United beat Liverpool 4-0 in Thailand, seizing his opportunity with a composed performance.

The 19-year-old had young teammate Zidane Iqbal alongside him, and they were both excellent as United kept a clean sheet.

His dad Robbie Savage took to Twitter to praise his performance, lauding him as ‘terrific’.

Charlie Savage’s dad Robbie was in Manchester United’s academy back in the early 90s but never made a first team appearance.

His son made his debut back in December in the Champions League, and this pre-season appearance was another stpe in the right direction.

Savage received praise from co-commentator Ben Thornley on MUTV, who described him as the type of player Roy Keane would have loved playing with, because he ‘never gives the ball away’.

He certainly did enough to warrant further pre-season opportunities, and Savage could have put himself in line for a few cup games this season too.

Erik ten Hag will want to see consistent progress from the youngster, while it would not be a surprise if United receive a few loan enquiries too.

Savage signed a new contract earlier this summer, extending his deal at Old Trafford until 2025.
