Manchester United continue to try and cut costs with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos now calling the shots at Old Trafford.

The road back to the top of the Premier League table is a long one and Manchester United are certainly finding that.

One transfer window isn’t going to solve all of United’s problems and Sir Jim Ratcliffe knows that this will be a long road.

Ratcliffe is attempting to cut costs across the board at United and on piece of news has surprised fans.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial duties at the club are now over with Ratcliffe telling the former United boss face-to-face that his payments are being stopped.

Ferguson turns 83 later this year and may have been looking to step away regardless, but his ambassadorial salary of around £2million will now be saved.

Rio Ferdinand on Sir Alex Ferguson decision

Some United fans aren’t happy though others believe that the time is right, some 11 years since Ferguson’s reign as United boss came to an end.

Ferguson will always be connected to United but he will take more of a back seat with his ambassadorial duties now over.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand – one of Ferguson’s biggest signings back in the early 2000’s – has now offered his opinion.

Ferdinand has taken to social media to suggested that ‘no one is safe’ at United if even Ferguson is being ‘taken out’.

Ferdinand feels that Ineos are now sending a serious message to everyone at United that they could be axed from the payroll.

This seems pretty dramatic and, given Ferguson’s age, this day was likely coming at some point soon.

United will always welcome Ferguson back to Old Trafford and Ineos will surely have made that clear whilst discussing his situation.

Who are Manchester United’s other ambassadors?

Ferguson will no longer be a United ambassador and Tuesday’s news brings the role of other ambassadors into question.

Ineos may be tempted to trim the payroll even further by ending ambassadorial roles for others.

Andy Cole, Bryan Robson, Denis Irwin, Dwight Yorek and Park Ji-sung are among the other United ambassadors.

The decision over Ferguson certainly brings some doubt over their futures too with Ineos looking to make gains across the club.
