Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United must write off trophies for next two seasons

Rio Ferdinand has warned Manchester United’s trophyless run could carry on for at least another couple of seasons.

United have not won a trophy since 2017, and watching Liverpool lift another cup at the weekend was another painful reminder of the taste of silverware become more and more distant.

In the summer United will hire a new manager, but rather than expecting and demanding instant results, Ferdinand is preaching patience.

Speaking to FIVE Ferdinand said: “I think personally United have got to write off the next year or two in terms of trophies, minimum, and say we are going to rebuild what we have, get our recruitment right, and say there is going to be a certain style of play under this new manager that we are going to go with.

“It’s going to take that long. You can’t make that transition, and win.

“Liverpool didn’t do it, how long did it take Klopp to win?

“Reality has to bite. Man United aren’t in a place to win and challenge for trophies, that’s it. The big trophies, the ones that matter, Premier League and Champions League.”

United fans lack patience for another rebuild

Rio Ferdinand’s comments are sensible and few would argue he is wrong when it comes to the big trophies. United are 19 points behind Manchester City right now, and that gap is likely to grow before the end of the current season.

It is going to take a big overhaul to get back on track, and that won’t happen instantly, so it is quite right that fans and the media must be patience with the next permanent manager.

At the same time, it’s a tough one for United supporters to take. We were sold a rebuild under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and this upcoming season, 2022/23 was the one when the plans were all supposed to really click into gear and move to the next level. Instead we find ourselves back at square one.

Second place last season and an array of big name signings last summer sped along the expectation schedule with Solskjaer, and he faltered.

Now, United fans are being told we have to be patient all over again. And perhaps thats simply a factual analysis of where we are, but it is so hard watching rival teams win silverware.

A FA Cup or Carabao Cup would be welcome right now. Even though Ferdinand references the other big two trophies as the ones which matter, lifting a cup was crucial for Sir Alex Ferguson’s teams to kickstart their greatness, and next season the club should still be targeting domestic cup success to lay a marker down and give the supporters reason to cheer.
