Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United man ‘needs to’ leave the club this summer

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says Harry Maguire should be looking to leave the club this summer.

To you or I, it seems pretty obvious that Harry Maguire is heading for the Old Trafford exit door this summer. Rio Ferdinand agrees.

Maguire has not started a game since Manchester United’s defeat at Sevilla, in which he was partly responsible for an error for the first goal conceded.

Since then he has been overlooked in favour of Luke Shaw, while Raphael Varane’s return from injury has further reduced his chances of game time.

Harry Maguire could leave Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand told FIVE he recommends Harry Maguire leave Manchester United this summer.

He stressed that he was not trying to criticise Maguire, saying that he simply needs to move on for the sake of his career due to a lack of playing time.

Ferdinand said: “I think he needs to. If he wants to resurrect his career he has to go in the summer.

“He cannot stay there and play second fiddle. If he genuinely wants to stay as an England player and get back on track.”

This season Harry Maguire has only seven Premier League starts to his name, plus a further eight from the bench.

It is a far cry from his debut season for Manchester United when he started all 38 games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Maguire has been captain in name only, with Bruno Fernandes taking the armband and assuming the responsibility of squad leader, whether the defender is on the pitch or not.

When United take on City at Wembley, there is little chance of Maguire leading the team out.

The England squad will soon be announced for fixtures against Malta and North Macedonia in June. He will at least be fresh, but his place is far from guaranteed, certainly as a starter.

A summer departure seems necessary in order for Maguire to make a case for his spot at Euro 2024.
