Rio Ferdinand says Man Utd have a player who could become ‘best in the world’ at his position in future

The current Manchester United is far away from the finished product under Ruben Amorim, as he has stressed himself but there are still positives.

Andre Onana has become an extremely dependable presence between the posts, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui are looking like bargains in defence, Manuel Ugarte is the same in midfield and the attack is full of potential.

Ineos’ inclination to make the squad younger and fitter has seen them buy players like Leny Yoro and Chido Obi-Martin who would never have come to Old Trafford under the Glazer regime.

It has set United up for the future and in Ruben Amorim, they have the perfect coach to oversee their development into elite players.

Rio Ferdinand believes one of these players won’t just be elite, he can be right up there as the “best in the world” at his position in the future.

Rio Ferdinand on Man Utd ace destined for the top

The XI against Arsenal had plenty of surprises, not least of which was the exclusion of Amad which baffled Gary Neville and Ian Wright.

However, amidst the surprises and suspensions, there was a landmark moment for one player in the Man Utd squad, as Leny Yoro made his competitive debut for the club.

Since suffering an injury against the same opponents in pre-season, he had been slowly stepping up his recovery and the moment finally came but in the toughest possible time.

Not only did he debut at the Emirates, but he did so when Arsenal were in the ascendancy and United were under the cosh as the opponents had the wind in their sails after scoring.

Ferdinand spoke on his YouTube channel and said that Arsenal’s William Saliba’s potential as one of the best in the world can only be rivalled by Leny Yoro.

Yoro’s cameo off the bench impressed him greatly as he repelled every threat and came away victorious in all one-on-ones in a frantic game.

Ferdinand said: “Saliba will be the best defender in the world when Virgil van Dijk gives up the post. It could be a year, or three but the only person who I think will rival him is Leny Yoro.

“To be injured and to come in and not just “do quite well”. He got in two situations one-on-one when Arsenal entered the box and he was on his own, he dealt with them both and dealt with them really well.”

“It was great to see another young centre-back come on, two or three years younger [than Saliba], and look so clean in the defensive situation right away in the Premier League.”

Leny Yoro’s Man Utd career should take off under Ruben Amorim

It is ironic that the manager under whom Leny Yoro was signed never got to receive his services on the pitch but his career is arguably best served to take off under Ruben Amorim.

The Man Utd manager has been extremely cautious with Yoro’s return so he could make a good first impression with Man Utd fans.

Fair to say, that he has done that and much more, as Ferdinand’s comments prove. After that cameo off the bench, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in the starting lineup in the near future.

The ease with which he came into a baptism of fire and emerged with his reputation enhanced speaks volumes about his potential.

United’s back-three system should suit him even better as his recovery pace should make him a lock for the right-sided centre-back spot.

Having just turned 19, he has all the physical and technical tools to make an impact on the ball and dominate the opponents off it.

This Arsenal cameo might well be remembered in the future as the game where it all began for Yoro if/when he becomes world-class in the future. Ferdinand is already convinced it will happen.
