Odion Ighalo scored two goals to fire Manchester United to a comfortable 3-0 win over Derby County.

Ighalo’s goals were both from open play from inside the penalty area, scoring one in each half.

This builds on his goal against Club Brugge last week and now he is up to three goals in two starts.

This is what he was signed to do, to contribute on the scoresheet and relieve pressure on Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

Ighalo could even have scored a hat-trick. He had a late chance under pressure which he snatched at and fired over the bar.

He will regret missing that, but overall he will be very pleased with his performance and the way he is growing into his role at the club.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand was in Nigeria filming when Ighalo’s transfer was announced.

He saw first hand the excitement his transfer generated in his homeland.

Ferdinand was overjoyed to see Ighalo on the scoresheet and reacted on social media after his brace.

Ferdinand told BT Sport ahead of the game, “What he does bring is a point. A point where they can focus and play into him from the midfield. He offers the platform to run off.”

He added afterwards that he felt Ighalo was one of United’s two best players on the night along with fellow goalscorer Luke Shaw.

He said: “This guy, he knows where the back of the net is. Players feel comfortable passing into him. He’s doing all the right things.

“This gives flexibility (tactically), United didn’t have that before.”

Now he’s scoring goals too, the move is looking like a success already.

Ighalo’s three goals has already matched the three Henrik Larsson scored during his 2007 loan spell.
