Rio Ferdinand reacts as Manchester United confirm Erik ten Hag appointment

Manchester United have confirmed that Erik ten Hag will be the club’s manager on the opening day of next season.

The long wait for the new man in charge has been ended with the Dutchman having been handed the control over United’s new era.

He has an initial three-year deal with the option for another and United will hope that by 2026, he is in charge of an attractive, successful United side.

Rio Ferdinand already spoke about ten Hag before the confirmation, saying: “He’ll be having conversations,” said Ferdinand. “He’ll be speaking to people like Rene (Meulenstein), Robin van Persie, Jaap Stam and Edwin van der Sar about what it is like at Manchester United.

“I know the people who are there right now are working diligently to get a structure in place for the new manager and have a real good go at getting the right talent.

“It’s about that conversation with ten Hag and the people that run the club on how the recruitment is done.

“The key conversation is who is that driven by? Is it the manager who’s incoming or the recruitment staff, saying ‘this is the player, this is the DNA’. These are the conversations I’m sure are happening.”

And now he has taken to Twitter to welcome ten Hag to the club…

We have already written that United legends need to give ten Hag a chance, given that they have leaned towards Mauricio Pochettino in the managerial race.

These former players can really shape the perception of the new manager, and the treatment he gets in the press in the wake of results on the pitch.

Ferdinand seems open to giving ten Hag a chance and he just wants to see the Dutchman take United back to the top of English football once again.

That is what we all want, but we will need to be patient. He has to finish the season with Ajax, and then a cup and top four is a realistic target next term, given where United are now.
