Rio Ferdinand predicts Manchester United will be one of three teams capable of challenging for the Premier League title this season.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Rio Ferdinand says that while Manchester City are favourites, Manchester United are one of two viable challengers.

The 2023/24 season kicks off this weekend, with Manchester United having to wait until Monday night to face Wolves.

Erik ten Hag’s side finished in third place last season, a big improvement on the previous campaign’s sixth place finish.

Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United can challenge

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United have the squad to mount a challenge for the title this coming season. He says the Red Devils are one of only two clubs who can threaten City.

Ferdinand said: “Man United and Arsenal, two challengers. If anyone’s going to get close to them [Man City], it’ll be those two.

“I still think there’s a difference between Manchester United and Manchester City: on the pitch and off the pitch. But I think Manchester United are going in the right direction. I think you can see how they have approached the transfer window, it’s been very decisive and forthright.”

Ferdinand snubbed Liverpool as potential challengers, with Jurgen Klopp’s side having to contend with the Europa League after only finishing fifth last season.

United can prove quality early

Manchester United put together a strong campaign last season which was undermined by some terrible away form.

In the first four games of this season, United visit Tottenham and Arsenal, games in which the side took just one point from last season.

If Erik ten Hag’s side can come away with two away wins, it could really shape a strong upcoming campaign. Too early to talk of titles, but it would set the tone for a positive season ahead.
