TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand has insisted that Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho told him that one of his teammates “unfollowed him” on social media.

Garnacho stole the limelight on Sunday after he scored a world-class bicycle kick in United’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

The 19-year-old United winger superbly connected with Diogo Dalot’s cross to fire the Red Devils into the lead inside the opening five minutes.

Garnacho has been hailed by both fans and pundits for his execution and timing of his overhead kick, with Everton boss Sean Dyche among those who praised him.

The Argentina international immediately celebrated by taking a page out of Cristiano Ronaldo’s playbook, with Garnacho a big admirer of the United legend.

Garnacho performed his own version of Ronaldo’s iconic ‘siu’ celebration before pointing to the floor in a fitting homage to his idol.

The United star even wore Nike’s Ronaldo-inspired Vapor 15 Mercurial Dream Speed boots for the Everton match, which Garnacho later presented to a young United fan.

Ferdinand on Garnacho and Lionel Messi

Garnacho, who was born in Spain but has represented Argentina at international level, has been capped for his country and played alongside Lionel Messi.

However, Ferdinand has claimed on his YouTube channel that the United forward told him that Messi unfollowed him on Instagram amid his love for Ronaldo.

Speaking on VIBE with FIVE, he said: “You know what I like about him? He doesn’t give a f**k.

“Garnacho told me that Messi unfollowed him just because he makes no secret of preferring Ronaldo.

“He comes out, don’t care, ‘I’m a Ronaldo man.’ Who’s the GOAT? Ronaldo. [Even] when he’s in the Argentina squad.”

What happened between Garnacho and Messi?

Eagle-eyed fans claimed that Argentina captain Messi had unfollowed Garnacho on Instagram after the United star’s tribute towards Ronaldo.

Garnacho posted a picture of himself in April 2022 alongside the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who was dubbed as the ‘GOAT’ in the caption on Instagram.

The Argentina winger, who was left out of his country’s squad for November’s international break, has made several posts about ex-United teammate Ronaldo.

Messi, who lifted his record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or award in October, doesn’t follow Garnacho on the Meta-owned social media platform at the time of writing.

Speaking on Garnacho’s overhead kick, Ferdinand admitted the United youngster’s strike eclipsed Wayne Rooney’s bicycle kick against Manchester City in 2011.

“Garnacho. One was off a shin pad, the other was off his boot. I’m sorry, Wazza,” he said.

“I was in my house in the front room with my family and we went ballistic. It was nuts.

“Even my little boy, his tooth had just [fallen] out, he fell and his tooth just got knocked out, he was trying to do overhead kicks in the living room like probably millions of little kids around the world at the time.

“That goal is better than Rooney’s. He was running away from the goal, a bit further away from the goal, at an angle. It was [an] unbelievable, breathtaking moment.”
