Rio Ferdinand backs under fire Manchester United man after promising performance

Rio Ferdinand has backed Manchester United man Andre Onana, who has had a rather inconsistent start to his Old Trafford career, to come good for the Red Devils.

Andre Onana joined the club from Inter Milan for £43 million this summer and was seen as the revolutionary signing to take Manchester United forward.

David De Gea left the club in the summer as his contract expired and the former Ajax goalkeeper was seen as the man who would improve United drastically with the ball.

However, the goalkeeper has had a poor start to his career at Old Trafford but he certainly looked much more confident in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United last weekend.

Ferdinand on Onana

Speaking to The Mirror, the ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand has praised the goalkeeper’s character and is confident he will be a success for the Red Devils.

“He looks like a confident kid. I’ve spoken to him a couple of times and he seems confident. Mistakes are part of it. He understands that,” Ferdinand said.

“But we have to remember that he’s not a goalkeeper who hasn’t had these moments before. He’s made mistakes and come back. He’s played for Inter Milan in a Champions League final, he’s played for Ajax in the Europa League final.

“He has the experience of making mistakes, rebuilding and going again. I think he can do that. He’s made of the right stuff. Speaking to the staff, they say forget about ability because you can tell he has the character for this.”

Onana’s promise

As mentioned, the 27-year-old certainly looked more assured for the Red Devils at Bramall Lane as he made a string of fine saves during the match.

The goalkeeper looked a lot more assured and came within inches of keeping out Oli McBurnie’s penalty to draw the game level.

The hope will be that the goalkeeper can carry on with these good performances and ensure that he is the goalkeeper for United.
