Rio Ferdinand has attempted to settle the debate over who was better out of Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

For nearly two decades now the debate has been over which of these English midfielders were the best to grace the Premier League and it has been argued for a long time.

Paul Scholes has dominated the trophies at Old Trafford with two Champions League titles, and 13 Premier League titles amongst others.

Frank Lampard has been ahead with his goalscoring prowess as the former Chelsea midfielder netted 211 goals for the Blues.

Steven Gerrard, meanwhile, was perhaps more known for the memorable moments on the big occasion, his performance in the Champions League victory over AC Milan in 2005, a particular highlight.

Ferdinand tries to settle debate

Speaking on the Obi One podcast with former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand attempted to give an answer and end the debate over the three sensational midfielders.

“It’s hard isn’t it,” Ferdinand said when posed with the question over who was better out of the trio.

“The one I enjoyed playing with the most was Scholesy. I could give the ball to Scholesy and shout a name. He wouldn’t look, but still be able to find them.

“He would do crazy stuff and even opposing players were going to me ‘does he do this every day?’ It was like we were at the cinema watching someone perform. What I loved about him is he could dictate a game, decide a game and he got other people playing better.”

Scholes’ career

The sheer reverence he is spoken of nowadays as well as the trophies he won during the golden era of United under Sir Alex Ferguson, means he has to be up there for the best midfielder in Premier League history.

Speaking to the Daily Mail back in 2011, former Barcelona midfielder and current manager of the Catalan side said of Scholes: “In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything.”

Scholes scored 155 goals during his career for the Red Devils, so he certainly knew where the back of the net was and scored some stunning goals during all of his years on the Old Trafford pitch.

He deserves all the plaudits that he will get and the Red Devils could certainly do with a player like him right now.
