Back in May, the Sun claimed Manchester United wanted Ryan Sessegnon, and that Fulham were demanding £100million for the teenager.
At the time, that price-tag did not raise as many eyebrows as it would now. After all, the 18-year-old had just enjoyed a superb campaign at Craven Cottage, scoring 16 goals and providing eight assists as his side earned promotion.
Tipped as the best young left-sided player in the country, Sessegnon looked every inch a future United signing. But things have changed.
In time, the teenager should still become an outstanding footballer. But it was always going to take him time to settle in the top flight. And so it has proved.
With two goals and five assists this season, Sessegnon is still heading in the right direction. But that is not the form of a £100million player.
In contrast, while Sessegnon has struggled, the man he was tipped to replace at United has flourished.
Luke Shaw is now one of the first names on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team sheet. He is also finally the player United thought they had signed from Southampton as a teen.
With Anthony Martial excelling further forward, United’s left side looks a lot stronger than it was under Jose Mourinho.
Perhaps Sessegnon will end up at United one day. But, as he prepares to face the resurgent Red Devils this weekend, those £100million claims look fanciful to say the least.
