Manchester United have been linked with a free transfer swoop which, if concluded, would be shocking.

United manager Jose Mourinho has already moved to strengthen his midfield this summer with the move for Brazilian midfielder Fred but the Manchester Evening News today have suggested that two more players may bolster that area of the squad.

As Mourinho seeks to best utilise his budget, it may mean economising elsewhere, and this may lead to him making a move to sign two players who were lining up for big rivals of United’s last season – the MEN say that Jack Wilshere and Yaya Toure may make the switch to Old Trafford.

Toure has publicly criticised Pep Guardiola as he departed the Etihad on acrimonious terms, with his agent saying he would play in the Premier League for a rival of City’s for a salary of just £1 a week.

Jack Wilshere would cost slightly more than that; the Arsenal playmaker does not appear to fit into the club’s new manager’s plans and he has already been linked with a move to West Ham. However, a wage of around £100,000 may make him an appealing prospect to Mourinho who could then use his transfer warchest to strengthen other areas of the team.

Wilshere has a history of injury problems but seemed to be over the worst last season and enjoyed a decent run of form.

United have been linked with Milinkovic-Savic of Lazio but his price tag seems prohibitive as Mourinho continues to negotiate with Tottenham and Juventus for two of their star defenders; both selling clubs are demanding high fees for their players, frustrating the United boss as he continues to rebuild.

Two free transfers in Toure and Wilshere may seem like prudent moves to bolster the squad depth at Old Trafford.
