Cody Gakpo is Liverpool-bound with Manchester United stepping aside from a potential deal.
As we wrote yesterday, there may be a better suited signing out there for United than Gakpo. Seeing him join Liverpool is the biggest downside to this.
Why Manchester United did not sign Cody Gakpo
According to The Athletic there were two reasons why Manchester United decided not to sign Cody Gakpo.
The first reason cited is a lack of funds. Even the relatively reasonable fee of £37 million was deemed more than United have available this month.
This would firmly scotch any claims United are planning to spend £106 million to sign Enzo Fernandez.
United are reported to be looking at budget options for this month due to limited cash flow.
It’s just another illustration of why Manchester United owners the Glazers need to sell the club as quickly as possible.

The second reason United declined to move for Gakpo is reported to be the club not being convinced he fitted the profile of centre-forward required.
This was a legitimate concern, with Gakpo more comparable to a Rashford in style than an out and out striker.
It’s possible that if United were 100 per cent convinced, then money would somehow have been found for the Dutchman.
Instead he heads to Liverpool, despite United’s reported belief he would have chosen them instead if they had made a bid.
