Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may have found his transfer activity frustrated by the start of the World Cup, but he is expected to get a major arrival over the line in the coming days.
Mourinho has been linked with a large number of names, some more concrete than others, as he seeks to close the gap on Manchester City after last season’s improvement in the league.
He has already acted swiftly enough and almost two weeks ago it was announced a deal had been agreed to sign Brazilian midfielder Fred.
However, BBC journalist Simon Stone tweeted yesterday that the transfer was not yet completed, but ‘should be next week’.
No sooner had United made their own official announcement of the transfer but Fred was reported as injured in training in Brazil’s World Cup training camp. However, despite this being headline news for a short period, the injury is not thought to be serious, and, as reported by Stone, all formalities with regards the transfer should be concluded this week so that the midfielder’s move from Ukraine is rubber-stamped.
United have already signed Diogo Dalot from Porto for £19m – the full back can play on either side and is expected to play as a right back at Old Trafford although he has predominantly played on the left so far in his fledgling career. The club’s need to strengthen in midfield is obvious since the retirement of Michael Carrick and the impending exit of Maruoane Fellaini.
