Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the temporary wearer of the number 10 shirt at Manchester United after Wayne Rooney left last year; but it was revealed this afternoon who the new occupant of the shirt will be.
The ‘number ten’ is a role where United could claim to be blessed, in terms of player. The shirt, however, is one of those special ones which carries a privilege at Old Trafford, and when United gave Wayne Rooney the shirt in 2007, it was worthy of a special announcement from the club with Denis Law being pictured in a photoshoot “gifting” the shirt to Rooney.
The majority of the speculation this summer has been on who will be the players to come in and strengthen the squad. However, it was announced on MUTV this summer that one of the club’s young players will be given the historic shirt.
That player, according to MUTV’s listings for today’s game with Bayern Munich, is Marcus Rashford.
Rashford made his debut in February 2016 and has enjoyed a rise to prominence; his double last year put Liverpool to the sword.
Rashford previously won the number 39, when he made his debut, and was upgraded to the number 19 for the last two seasons. The decision to give him the number ten is sure to be received warmly by the United support.
