A report in The Times claims Manchester United are not expected to make any signings in the January transfer window.
Elite players are hard to sign in January. United have reportedly sights set on Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer as the club’s top target.
United are claimed to be keen to offer contract extensions to the trio of Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, and Ashley Young, whose deals expire in the summer.
There is no mention in the report of Andreas Pereira, whose deal also runs out on June 30.
What does it mean for Solskjaer?
The stance on no transfers at present shows United have confidence in the squad at present that it can crack the top four. It hints there is some belief in him too.
This may prove to be a miscalculation. It at least shows the progress Solskjaer has made to get United back in the running.
United’s board are not exactly throwing their weight behind Solskjaer at this point, but it’s too early in the process to do so.
A decision will be made on the future of the next United boss in May. Whoever gets the job will have 100 per cent of an available transfer budget to kick on.
