Anthony Martial now ordered to train on his own after illness

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has been ordered to train on his own in an effort to improve his fitness levels.

United drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and now have a break with no fixture until the 28th of January.

League Two side Newport County will be the opponents in the FA Cup and Erik ten Hag’s focus will be turning towards that game.

Some fringe players may be hoping to feature but it sounds like Anthony Martial needs a big turnaround in order to be in contention…

Anthony Martial training on his own at Manchester United

The Daily Mail now report that forward Martial has been told to train on his own at Carrington.

Martial recently picked up an illness and hasn’t played a first-team game since the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on the 9th of December.

The Frenchman missed the festive period and hasn’t featured in 2024 so far, and it turns out that he is now being told to train alone.

Martial allegedly hasn’t regained full fitness since his illness bout and is training away from the first team until he gets himself ready for first-team action again.

It’s important to note that Ten Hag’s decision to make Martial train on his own is not a disciplinary decision, but purely to focus on getting him fully fit again.

Martial isn’t fit enough for Ten Hag’s first-team sessions right now and it’s unclear when he will be brought back into the mix.

Martial surely in his final few months at Old Trafford

After nearly nine years of disappointment, Martial’s time at United is surely coming to an end.

Fans will fondly remember his unbelievable debut goal against Liverpool, seemingly announcing himself as United’s present and future following a move from Monaco.

Sadly, we are left to think about what could have been with Martial.

There is bags of talent in there but we have seen all too infrequently with Martial hanging just 12 league goals since the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

Martial’s contract ends this summer and there is surely no way United keep him, even with an option to extend his contract by a year.

These fitness problems are just the latest setback for Martial and after looking like becoming a United hero, his final few months at he club probably can’t go quickly enough for many supporters.
