Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may be a known admirer of Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic but, according to reports, he will not use Inter’s apparent interest in Juan Mata to negotiate a deal where Perisic finally moves the other way.
Inter Milan have been keen to add a creative player to their squad this summer with their most high-profile and optimistic chase being that of Real Madrid’s Luka Modric. According to Italian journalist Di Marzio, it was actually Manchester United who noted the rumour and contacted Inter to alter them to the availability of Juan Mata as an alternative.
Inter, however, are not keen on the deal. And the BBC’s Simon Stone – usually a credible voice on such matters – reacted to the rumours by stating clearly that United had no present interest in Ivan Perisic, meaning that if Inter were persuaded to sign Mata, they would probably have to deal in a straight cash deal.
It would make some sense for Mourinho to try and raise funds by selling Mata. United are well-stocked on the right hand side and Mourinho has been under pressure to try and shift some of the senior players before making another signing. He has, however, so far been unable to find a buyer for some of the extra defenders, with Juventus’ interest in Matteo Darmian, and Wolves and Everton’s interest in Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling not materialising into a firm deal as yet.
Mourinho is keen to add to his attack but Perisic is left sided and that is probably the area of the squad where he is most brimming with talent from his senior pool. With just two days remaining in the transfer window, the United boss is sure to only have increased frustration that he has been unable to get another deal over the line.
