Rene Meulensteen has followed Louis van Gaal by encouraging a Netherlands star to reject a move to Manchester United.
Van Gaal warned Jurrien Timber against a move earlier this summer, warning his international chances could be harmed. Fortunately, Tyrell Malacia ignored the advice.
Former Manchester United coach Meulensteen has now urged PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo to snub the club’s advances.
Gakpo has been linked with a move to United before deadline, with De Telegraaf among the outlets talking up the club’s interest.

Rene Meulensteen on Cody Gakpo
Speaking to the Algemeen Dagblad, former Sir Alex Ferguson assistant Rene Meulensteen spoke about Manchester United’s transfer policy, and was not very complimentary.
Meulensteen expressed doubts over United’s direction, over whether Gakpo could produce in the Premier League to high consistency, and speculated that there may also be better moves out there for him in the future, or a more stable situation.
He also expressed concern whether Antony would also be a big hit in English football.
Meulensteen said: “The transfer policy is a big mess. They’ve been chasing Frenkie de Jong for so long, that didn’t go through. Then they wanted Adrien Rabiot, that didn’t work either. Marko Arnautovic didn’t either. They are still trying to get Antony and Cody Gakpo, but I also have my doubts about that.
“Those guys are fantastic in the Eredivisie, but that is no guarantee that they can continuously make a difference here.”
“If I were Gakpo, I would say thank you for the honor and say: I’m staying with PSV. I would say to him: boy, there are more clubs coming. At PSV you had the chance to play Champions League, you’re on that [path]. At the moment at Manchester United not so sure.”
Gakpo’s PSV were eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers earlier this week, potentially making a deal easier.
However, The Independent claims the Gakpo deal is only likely to be sanctioned if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves.
Last season Gakpo scored 21 goals for PSV and also provided 15 assists.
