Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has criticised the Glazer family in a new interview.
The Glazer family are set to agree a 25% stake with Sir Jim Ratcliffe which means the 71-year-old will have a major say in the future of Manchester United.
The American family have deservedly received constant criticism throughout their 18-year stint in charge of the club and it seems they are finally ready to relinquish some control of the football club.
Ratcliffe has some ambitious plans for the club and looks to be adding the most qualified people into positions of power at Old Trafford, something the Glazers would never countenance.
Meulensteen on Glazers
Speaking to The Guardian about the owners, Meulensteen didn’t hold back with his verdict on the owners of the biggest club in England.
“I doubt there’s any influence now because the Glazers are 4,000 miles away,” the Dutchman said.
“The only thing you can question is the backing of the managers – and, yes, they’ve backed them with finances. But you saw Ole Gunnar Solskjær come out and say ‘I wanted X player, X player’ and none came. For example, signing Harry Kane this summer was guaranteeing 25 to 30 goals, but they didn’t do it because they thought he was too old.
“We were always operating out of a position of strength. United aren’t doing that at the moment. There’s been a lot of negative pressure created around the club, from the media and outside. Over 10 years, there’s been six managers… it’s too ridiculous for words.”
Glazers failing to back managers
Despite the outlandish sums of money being spent at Old Trafford, the Glazer family have not backed every manager to the best of their abilities.
As Meulensteen mentions, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted different names but he says he wasn’t provided with those names when he spoke to The Athletic.
The hope will be that Ratcliffe is prepared to fully back Erik ten Hag for the next stage of the rebuild.
